Gillett, General Passenger Agent, L. V. & T. Railway. Proposed by the Commission that the folowing reductions be made: Southern Pacific Company (main line) from 4 cents to 3 1-2 cents per mile. Nevada & California Railway, from 5 cents to 4 cents per mile. S. P., L. A. & S. L. Railway, from 5 cents to 4 cents per mile. Las Vegas & Tonopah Railway, from 6 cents to 5 cents per mile. Tonopah & Goldfield Railway, from 6 cents to 5 cents per mile. Mr. Fee of the Southern Pacific Company objected strenuously to a mileage reduction and went into detail to show to the Commission that he was entirely willing to give the people of Nevada the benefit of a substantial reduction, but that a mileage reduction would greatly reduce the company's revenue on all through travel passing through the State and which reduction would not operate to the benefit of the residents of Nevada. The explanation is as folows: For instance the through rate from Chicago or Kansas City to San Francisco is much less than the combination of local rates, that is figuring that a local ticket is bought over each individual line in making the trip from Chicago to San Francisco, the local tickets thus purchased would total a much greater rate than the through joint ticket would cost, therefore in making of these through joint rates over two or more lines, the combination of each line's local rate is figured as the basis of proportion that each line shall take out o...
