Esmeralda Santiago author of "Almost a Woman" and "When I Was Puerto Rican" I don't know how Laura Cunningham does it, how she can be so funny and yet so sad. I thought about her characters long after I'd finished reading "Beautiful Bodies," as if I'd been invited to the party and wished I'd exchanged phone numbers with every one of the guests.
