Riots--food riots, merchant riots, weaver riots, agrarian riots--- Bohstedt analyzes 600 riots and comparative case studies that show how widespread and successful riots were as a form of popular politics at the end of the 18th century in England and Wales. These riots were shaped by a knd of 'protocol of riot'--by conventions that varied with community politics, from a small classic town like Devon, to the industrial boom town like Manchester, to the quiet countryside. In all of these riot was a constituent element in the local landscape of power and conflict. Bohstedt analyzes the nature of these riots in various kinds of communities and uses contrasts to reveal the inner connections between the discipline, frequency and success of these 18th century riots. He also draws broader conclusions about the significance of such riots. 310 pages with Manuscript Sources, Notes, and Index. 6.25 x 9.5 inches. 1983, Harvard University Press, Cambridge Massachusetts and London, England1.
