Reseña del editor:

Here is a complete biography of Ivan Aksakov, a prominent intellectual figure in Russia during the reigns of Tzars Alexander II and III. Aksakov began his fiery career as a critic of Slavophilism, a movement created by his brother Konstantin, along with Alexis Khomiakov, the brothers Kireevskii, and others, which sought to divorce Russia from the West and all Western influence. Circumstances, however, turned Aksakov into the fanatical leader of the Slavophiles, making him a passionate nationalist and Pan-Slavist, and a fierce anti-Semite. Although he accepted the reforms of the 1860's, he feared that their results would lead to the further Westernization of Russia; and, toward the end of his life, disillusioned and despairing, he lent a generous hand to reaction.

This book is based on a meticulous study of primary sources such as collected works, correspondence, private memoirs, and recollections.

Ivan Vasil'evich Kireevsky (1806~1856), an intellectual born into a landed family of religious and conservative traditions, was the most important theoretician of Russian Slavophilism ~ a movement which attempted to define the essence of Russia's historical development and destiny with reference to a counterrevolutionary model of idealized communal forms. From about 1770 to 1830, German culture went through a major period of creativity, much of it tinged by political romanticism, the major current of intellectual hostility to Enlightenment thought. Profoundly stimulated by German idealist philosophy, Kireevsky and his contemporaries created a vision of the world which exerted a long~lived and pervasive influence on virtually every aspect of Russian culture. History, Orthodox theology, literature, folklore, and philosophy were but some of the areas affected by the impact of Slavophilism. In this biography, Mr. Gleason recounts the development of Slavophile doctrine by drawing upon Kireevsky's letters, diaries, and journals. He also discusses the historical importance of the debate of the 1840's between the Slavophiles and the so~called Westerners: both groups opposed the current regime in Russia, yet the Westerners gravitated toward liberalism and socialism, while the Slavophiles created a mythology of the preindustrial past. European and Muscovite is the history of a man who never fully realized his dreams but whose life, according to the author, "provides another illustration of the deep similarities between those who criticized the emerging world of nineteenth~century Europe with reference to the values of the past ~ in an idealized form ~ and those who fought against their age by trying to look beyond it.".
