Excerpt from Instruction Paper
History, however, is not unilineal but multilineal. Numerous threads must be taken up, carried into, and incorporated with, the principal thread; and this must be done in such manner as to give unity to the whole, and preserve its interest and intelligibility. This, it is easy to see, is a verv difficult task. The sequence of events with respect to time cannot be observed, for, after tracing the main thread of the narrative through a certain period, the writer is compelled to go back again and again, and follow the minor threads to the point where he broke off. A11 unavoidable consequence is that the reader 1s confused by the multitude of extrinsic incidents making up the complete story, the effect upon his mind is weakened, and he is quickly wearied.
