In the spirit of Sharpe comes another adventure of Sergeant Jack Crossman and the Crimean War. Rousing stories of battle adventures and the horrors of campaign life are related with meticulous historical detail.
Sergeant Jack Crossman of the 88th, the Connaught Rangers, nicknamed ‘Fancy Jack’ by the troops for his aristocratic birth yet choosing to join the ranks instead of buying a commission, is now established, with his gang of motley troublemakers from the regiment, as one of the British Army’s secret weapons in the Crimean War.
Seriously wounded on one of his near-suicide missions to the besieged city of Sebastopol, Crossman is there to take part in the famous ‘thin red line’ and witnesses the tragic charge of the Light Brigade, as well as the valiant, and more successful, charge of the Heavy Brigade, in the Battle of Balaclava, one of the most famous battles of the Crimean War.
Garry Douglas relates the terror, thrill and horror of ‘black powder battle’ in this rousing follow-up to The Devil’s Own, Sergeant Jack Crossman’s first adventure.
“C’EST MAGNIFIQUE, MAIS CE N’EST PAS LA GUERRE”
'The Valley of Death', with the ingenious and bold Sergeant Jack Crossman at the centre, relates rousing stories of battle exploits an horrifying truths of the Crimean campaign with verve, dash and meticulous historical detail, in the spirit of the great military adventures.
The Crimean War – renowned as one of the most brutal and bloody conflicts of the nineteenth century. In an uneasy alliance with the French, the Turks and the Sardinians, the British soldiers face death both on the battlefield from the fierce Cossacks, and off it from the scourge of cholera. Sergeant Jack Crossman, tough, shrewd and skilful, is part of the proud 88th regiment, the Connaught Rangers, also known as the Devils’s Own after Wellington saw them and exclaimed, ‘I don’t know what effect those men will have on the enemy, but by God they terrify me.”
Following on from 'The Devils Own',the adventures of ‘Fancy Jack’ Crossman and his motley crew of troublemakers from the regiment continue in 'The Valley of Death'. Recovering from their successful first battle against the Russians, the bloody Battle of the Alma, the British, French and Turkish allied troops are spread thinly between the city of Sebastopol, fiercely defended by the Russians, and the Balaclava harbour to the south. Sergeant Crossman is again singled out to go on a secret mission to undermine the Russian defences in the besieged city. Almost killed in his attempt, he returns just in time to take his place in the ‘thin red line’ at the most famous battle of the Crimean War, the Battle of Balaclava, where he will witness the tragic and hopeless Charge of the Light Brigade on the heavily protected Russian defences.
