At the age of fourteen John Crossworth runs away from his poverty-stricken home, consumed with the ambition to return in triumph. Years later he does so, as the prosperous owner of the local pit. With him he brings his new wife – the handsome and brilliant Sarah. But she is viewed as an outsider within the closed mining community, regarded with suspicion as a Jewess. Rejected by the Crossworth family and by the miners, she is only accepted when tragedy strikes at the pit.

Rapidly building his empire, Crossworth turns from coal to cotton, founding a business dynasty which dominates the Lancashire town. But as time passes the consequences of the pit tragedy overshadow the children who were born on that fateful night – the co-inheritors of the fortune, the Crossworth twins. As the two brothers become enemies, the dream that their father made reality is threatened by greed, envy and revenge.
