'David Copperfield' was based partly on Dickens’ own childhood and is perhaps most famous for two of its principal characters – the villainous Uriah Heep and the friendly but penniless Mr Micawber.
On his return from a happy holiday, David finds his mother has married a cold tyrant, Edward Murdstone. David is packed off to a harsh school and when his mother dies he is left completely at the mercy of his stepfather.
This wonderful reading by the distinguished actor, Paul Schofield, follows David Copperfield from childhood to maturity while keeping the atmosphere of event and character that gives Dickens his charm.
