Anita Margolis had vanished. There was no body, no crime – nothing more than an anonymous letter and the intriguing name of Smith. According to headquarters, it wasn't to be a murder enquiry at all. In fact, Inspector Burden had no trouble seeing a pattern in the Margolis case. Anita was wealthy, flighty and thoroughly immoral. Decent women had clean, tidy homes, and were either married or had jobs, or both – they didn't live with eccentric brothers and bring lovers home in the afternoon. And they knew better than to keep their money in their handbags. It is clear as daylight to Inspector Burden what had happened to Anita Margolis. Chief Inspector Wexford, however, had other ideas.
