No place, published by Adolph Sutro, (1874). Cover title, two conjugate leaves, two pages. Agreeing with Sutro that the introduction of Senate Bill 16 is a plot by California banking interests to take property from Sutro that had been guaranteed by a prior law passed by Congress to encourage investment in the Sutro Tunnel. "It is perilous to deal incautiously with an adversary who thinks it right to do wrong." This pamphlet was cited in the Congressional Record for March 19, 1874, during a heated discussion of the issue. Judge Black was Attorney General and Secretary of State under Buchanan. A little toning and light handling creases, a Very Good copy.

Dated Feb. 9 and 24, 1937, the second mentions "This new job on Franklin", which was published in 1938 and won a Pulitzer Prize. With original mailing envelopes and rough draft of typed Sadow letter with holograph corrections. Sadow sounds like a beat-nik with his lingo. All materials are Fine.

Brown elaborately embossed cloth, gilt-lettered, Part I xvi, 258; Part II viii, 174. Collates complete including all the illustrations and maps: Part I, 74 engravings on steel; 3 engravings on copper; engravings on stone; 20 wood cuts. In Part II: a large folding map on stone, colored; 25 illustrations in the text; 21 steel plates on paleontology. Some rubbing of the boards, the spine panel with cuts along both edges, the gilt entirely eroded, a tiny bit of paper pasted at the top of the spine, perhaps meaningful to G.C. Swallow, who has pasted a small engraved ownership sticker, designating this volume "No. 1"; or it's related to the other small sticker on the pastedown, "Library of / The College of Montana / Deer Lodge, Montana". Also residing there, the small sticker "Franklin Philp (sic) / Bookseller and Stationer / . / Washington, D.C." Still solidly bound, but the cloth lifting up on the spine. Good, only.

Original quarter red cloth over blue cloth, printed paper label, a folding map, facsimile hand-writing, and two photogravure portraits, 232 pages. This is a reproduction of excerpts from the 1847 first edition. There were "two hundred and fifty numbered copies", this one un-numbered and un-signed. A lovely production, As New.

Medium brown cloth, gilt lettered and ruled on the spine and the front, and pictorial dust jacket. The volume in Fine condition, the jacket Good, with some shallow chips along some edges.

Many illustrations in the text, a few engraved plates inserted and a folding map, 800 pages. Re-cased a recent new spine cloth matching the pictorial board, and recent endpapers, inserted frontis. In Very Good condition.

"Done into English.by Thomas Townsend". London: "Printed for T. Woodward.J.Hooke.and J. Peele.", 1724. First English edition. Contemporary full calf, lettered in gilt, an embossed design and gilt rules along the edges of both boards, gilt inner dentelles, all edges marbled, the leaves 9 x 13 inches, with wide margins. The format is folio, the text collates complete, engraved frontis, five folding engraved plates and two folding maps inserted. Edges rubbed, both boards neatly detached, about a three inch piece of spine leather missing near the bottom. The frontis is foxed, the title browned from contact with the frontis; the rest of the paper clean and bright. If repaired this would be in Very Good condition.

Inscribed and signed by "the publisher" to Doris Harris, dated 1973. The publisher was John Howell's son Warren - his father had died just before publication. Edited by Harold A. Small. Davis had visited California in 1831 and 1831, and was a resident from 1837 to his death in 1890. A Fine copy.

Quarter faux black leather, vinyl transparent front wrapper, black vinyl spine and back wrap, 137 pages, illustrations on nearly every page, many in color. A settlement along the Carson River, famous for its mills processing the Comstock ore - plenty of water was required. Covers the history of the town all through the years into modern times. A Fine copy.
