Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. Illustrated by Frontispiece Engraving and Map Ilustrador. Full contemporary calf binding with four slightly raised bands on spine. The lettering on the second and fourth compartments has completely faded. Marbled end papers and paste-downs; sewn text block. The binding is quite worn and the front hinge is a bit tender, but still tight. The previous owner's name is written in ink on front end page and there are pencil notations and some markings in the text. The bottom of the frontispiece and the first few pages are waterstained, but the fold-out map is still in nice condition. ; The steel-engraved frontispiece is untitled- it appears to be a group of Protestant ministers on an island labeled "Truth" in a stormy sea safely above a group of Catholic leaders struggling not to drown surrounded by books and documents with titles such as "Lives Of The Saints" and "Bull." There is also a two-fold topographical map of "The Valleys Of Piedmont" which is in very nice condition. At the end of the History of the Waldenses is an engraving of theWaldensian symbol Lux lucet in tenebris ("A light shines in the darkness"). The Recommendatory Letter and a letter written by the editor were done for this American edition. The editor's letter (addressed to William Jay, president of the Westchester Bible Society) states that Perrin's history is of particular importance to American citizens because so many of them are descended from French Protestants who fled to America after the revocation of the Edict Of Nantes. Perrin's original introduction is dated 1618. Each of the three sections has a separate title page. "History Of The Waldenses" is divided into three sections: Origins, History and Historical Notes; "History Of The Old Albigenses Anterior To The Reformation" : History until the persecutions of the thirteenth century, history of their latter wars until their suppression, and remains of their doctrine and discipline; "History Of The Ten Persecutions Of the Vaudois": history of the Valdois, an account of the tenth persecution, and an account of their wonderful return. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 475 p. pages; Originally published in the early 1600s, Perrin's history is considered a classic of Waldenses history. The Waldenses orginated as an asectic Christian movement in the 12th century and became in conflict with the Catholic Church and were persecuted for their beliefs. In 1532, they aligned themselves with the Protestants and identified with the Calvinist movement. This is a scarce, comprehensive history of the Waldenses originally written in the early 1600s. It may be the first American editon of Perrin's book.

The novel follows the career of Hendrik Rutgers who starts out as a lowly bank teller and works his way up the career ladder to become a business mogul. Lefevre is best known for his novel, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (1923). His novels, "H. R." included are noteworthy because of their detailed description of Wall Street and the financial markets of the early 20th century.

The front free paper is creased along the fold and top two inches are torn, but the rest of the page is still attached. ; Volume 1 only of a three volume set. At the end of the book is a 16 page index of the first volume. There are two copper plates in this volume- frontispiece illustation of a nobleman's garden and a five fold plate (four vertical folds and one horizontal fold) opposite page 283. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Roger Tory Peterson Ilustrador. First Edition; Second Printing. Pebbled green cloth covers with silver lettering on front cover and spine. This is a field guide that has definitely spent time in the field. It is a used copy with worn and slightly sprung covers, soiled page edges and some discoloration and water staining to some of the pages. Also, although there aren't any loose pages, the text block has weakened and since the pages aren't sewn together, the book needs to be handled gently. The previous owner's name (Wm P Wharton, Groton, Mass- Aug-1, 1934) written in ink on the front end paper and stamped in purple ink on the title page and rear end paper. A small book store sticker is glued to the bottom of the front end paper. Despite its condition, this is a hard to find early printing of the first bird guide book and one of the most influential books of natural history. ; Color plates - frontispiece, opposite pp. 118, 124, and 136 all with tissue guards with the name of the birds typed on them. In the index "bob-pumper" has been corrected to read "bog-pumper. The date, "1934" is not on the title page. The illustrations of the Whistling Swan (plate opposite p. 18) and the White Egret (plate opposite p. 12) all have the grey shaded plumage found only in the first and second states of this edition. Peterson, himself, lamented the quality of his drawings for the first edition. These are the points that identify this book as a second state copy. The original owner, William P. Wharton, of Groton, Massachusetts, was an early conservationist who was one of the first people to receive a bird banding permit and operated a banding station at his residence in Groton. During his lifetime, Wharton purchased more than 700 acres of farmland which became the Wharton Plantation Memorial Forest. Laid-in is a folded two page typewritten critique of the guide by nature writer Samuel Atkins Eliot jr. Entitled "NOTES on 'A Field Guide to the Birds' by R. T. Peterson made by S. A. Eliot, Jr." In this critique, Eliot extolls the virtues of the book stating that it will become the "mentor and authority" of most people engaged in field birding but also points out several imperfections in the illustrations. At the bottom of the second page, he writes that he could have added several more "suggestions" if space allowed. But he also states that the book's good points are countless and no book is perfect. The preface to this critique above the title reads: "To the owners of "A Field Guide to the Birds" by R. T. Peterson the following should be of unusual value; to those who have not yet acquired a copy it should be a stimulus for immediately doing so. -Editor." It's interesting that Eliot, the co-writer of "Birds of the Connecticut Valley in Massachusetts" pointed out the deficiencies of the first edition of the field guide that Peterson himself remarked upon. This critique is typed on regular typing paper, not on a letterhead, so it can't be determined who was the editor and what he edited. The pages are folded so that they would fit inside the book and are creased, discolored and a bit fragile but still very legible. Despite its worn and somewhat fragile condition, this is a hard to find early (second) state with both a significant association with William Wharton and also Samuel Atkins Eliot jr. ; Black and white and color plates; 12mo 7 1/2" x 4 1/2"; xxi, 167 p. pages.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. Illustrated by Edwin Jones Prittie and Others Ilustrador. First Edition; probable first printing. The book is in good plus condition - green cloth covers with black illustration and title on front panel and title and title and author in black lettering on spine. The covers are just a bit worn with some shelf wear to corners and edges. The illustration on the front panel is clean and bright. The page edges are a bit scuffed and soiled and the end papers are somewhat browned. The contents are tight and clean. The dust jacket, however, is in poor condition - the flaps are separated from the jacket, but are present, and the dust jacket itself is split into two halves with a vertical cut in the center of the spine. There is paper loss on the bottom half of this split. Although the front panel is worn and creased, the color illustration of Sgt York battling the Germans is in decent condition. All-in-all, a nice copy in a poor dust jacket. ; This copy appears to be a first printing- there are no additional printings listed on the copyright page. The book is illustrated with a color frontispiece and black and white plates (some from photographs, some illustrations). Signed in ink by Sergeant York ("Sgt Alvin C York") on front end pages. Also, underneath York's signature there is the signature of Corporal Clifford R. Brown ("Corp Clifford R. Brown"). Corporal Brown served with the 77th Division, 308th Infantry, Company C. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in action at Binarville ( Argonne Forest) , France. This was the "Lost Battalion" during the battle of Argonne Forest. Although Sergeant York's exploits of bravery are well documented, The Lost Battalion's bravery during the Battle of Argonne Forest is no less notable. ; Color frontispiece, black& white illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 240 pages; The book isn't just about Sergeant York and his adventures. There are seven (of 27) chapters about other "Long Hunters", men who hunted and fought with long-barreled muzzle loaders. The text is written at a easy-to-read level, similar to the boys adventure stories written during this time. ; Signed by Sergeant York.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Poor. Illustrated by No Illustrations Ilustrador. Book is in poor to fair condition - Green blind stamped publisher's cloth with gold lettering on spine. The covers are worn and soiled but intact. The paper is the brittle, acidic paper typical of books published by publishers such as the International Library Publishers. The free end pages are brittle and yellowed and the inner hinges are cracked and the first gathering of pages is beginning to loosen. Despite these flaws, the text is complete and relatively tight. Even though the first few pages at the beginning of the book and the last couple at the end of the book are brittle, the text is for the most part tight and less fragile. ; Four page introductory note by the translator, La Monte and a sixpage preface by Deville. At the end of the book, there is a four page press review of Eugene Sues "The Silver Cross." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Deville was a French socialist thinker who supported Marx's theories of the weaknesses of capitalism. Through his writings, Deville helped to introduce Marxism to a wider audience in Europe and also the United States. His preface to this abridgement of Marx's "Capital" is considered to be a masterful explanation of Marx's writing and helped to make Marxism more accessible to the public (Wikipedia) . Deville's epitome was orginally published in French in 1883 and this appears to be the first English translation intended for Americans. In his introductory notes , dated 1899, La Monte states that Deville's epitome is not intended to be a substitute for "Capital" itself but intended for those who don't have the time or inclination to read the entire work. This appears to be the first American edition of what is considered to be the most important abridgement of Marx's "Capital.".

Añadir al carritoFull leather. Condición: Poor. Illustrated by No Illus Ilustrador. 8vo, 616pp, Leather boards are scuffed but tight, spine labels faded but intact, missing endpages, some dog-eared page corners. This is volume three of "The Works of George Fox" which was done in eight volumes. There is foxing and browning throughout, especially on pages in which leaves had been placed to dry. The endpages, front and back are missing. The first page is the half-title, and the last is a two-page index. The hinges are still in good condition and the contents are tight and complete. There are two of Fox's works in this volume, "The Great Mystery of the Great Whore" (1659) and "Saul's Errand to Damascus, With His Packet of Letters From the High Priests Against the Disciples of the Lord. ". The Great Mystery represents Fox's longest and most important book. It established him as one of the most prominent writers during the time at which Quakerism was becoming more respected and thoughtful. This was Fox's way of answering the anti-Quaker sentiment being expressed in books and tracts. Each section is a rebuttal of opposing opinions, complete with direct quotations and references from the offending books or pamphlets. "Saul's Errand" was a pamphlet cowritten with James Nayler and published in 1654 as a reaction to a "petition contrived by some persons in Lancashire, who call themselves ministers of the gospel, breathing out threatenings and slaughter against a peaceable and godly people there, by them nick-named Quakers. " These two works are considered to be cornerstones of the Quaker faith written by one of the founders of Society of Friends. Very hard to find, except in recently done reprints. GOOD-/--, scuffed, worn covers, foxing and browning throughout.

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Fair. Illustrated by Black & White Photos Ilustrador. First Edition. Stapled text block with blue heavy stock covers. The spine was originally covered with cloth tape, but the tape is missing. There is residue remaining from the tape. The covers are worn and soiled , with "5.00" written in ink. The contents are also soiled and toned with stains and foxing. Due to what apparently was a printer's error, the letter on page 257 is rendered unreadable because the print on the page not only is horizontal but also verticla, giving it a cross hatch appearance. On the inside of the front cover is "No. 47" and Harriet Vaught's signature in black marker along with a $13.00 price written in ink. The text is tightly stapled with three staples. ; The text consists of copies of typewritten transcripts of Dr. Berry's letters to his wife Mary (Molly) Crebs Berry. His correspondence starts in September 1862 and they were married in December of that year while he was stationed in Shawneetown. The letters start in September 1862 and continue until June 1865 (despite the dates listed in the title). There is no publishing information, so it is assumed that it was privately printed by Vaught, who was know in White County for her historical writings and publications. Included is three pages of copies of photos of Dr. Berry and other officers from the 87th Regiment. The regiment was attached to the 16th Army Corps inTennessee and after the surrender of Vicksbug fought in the Western Louisiana campaign. Dr. Berry's letters are nicely detailed, giving the reader a detailed description of army life and of his regiment's movements and actions.
