Año de publicación: 1850

Encuadernación: Hardcover

Condición del libro: VERY GOOD

Notable front hinge, sturdy binding threads hold on front board. Spine and corners rather rubbed, a bit of edgewear and light scuffing to board surfaces. Pages a bit age-tanned. Three-quarter bound in deep green leather with maroon marbled boards, top edge gilt, and marbled endpapers. A newspaper article about the novelist tipped to page opposite title page. Old card from a library file laid-in. No markings. Rather clean and solid for its advanced age. A lovely little volume. 444 pp. First English novel written by a woman, in epistolary form. "No female novelist worthy of name appeared in England until the reign of George III. The lady who first had the courage to brave public opinion was Frances Burney, the friend of Garrick and Dr. Johnson. Miss Burney remained unmarried until she was nearly forty years of age. Romance is then supposed to exercise a less dominant power, but she, nevertheless, had the imprudence to espouse Monsieur d'Arblay, a French refugee. and the wife became the bread-winner," (from article).
