Second edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. ( 203mm. ) Pp. [3] 4 - 15 [1]. Contents lightly waterstained. Recent paper wrappers. Price from imprint: price Two-Pence, or One Hundred Copies 10s. 6d. There is doubt as to whether Cobbett was the author of this pamphlet. Pearl [1] notes ' Authorship dubious, probably written with Cobbett's assistance. but it is not quite certain that he was the author . Probably, however, he was not the sole author, and he may have written the pamphlet, his first attempt at political writing, in conjunction with other enemies of corruption whom he joined at this time in the struggle for the rights of soldiers. ' Pearl [1] also notes that this is a ' Typescript copy of the 1st edition ' [ 1793. ] William Cobbett ( 1762 - 1835 ) essayist, politician and agriculturist. The incentive for this pamphlet was a government request for an extra £23,000 in the Army Estimates in order to raise the private soldier's allowance to three shillings a week, a sum already legally assured but witheld by the army. Both editions of this pamphlet are not that well held in institutions and are rarely seen for sale. Arnold M. Muirhead in the Library, Fourth Series, Vol XX. No.I.
