Descripción Illustrated laminated wrappers, 8vo, approx 144 pp, facs. 955 items. From the introduction - " This catalogue includes the largest remaining collection formed by Anne and Fernand Renier. .they sought out radical material from the "Romantic' period to illustrate the political and social background of contemporary literature. . A strong vein of satire runs throughout. Section I, c. 1780-1802, includes moderate Whig attempts, after Wilkes, to reform an increasingly corrupt system of government, the sometimes violent contemporary reactions to the French Revolution - and equally firm attempts by government to control freedom of the press. Burke and his main antagonist Paine provide inspiration to following generations of politicians. A substantial group of items details the Regency Crisis following George Ill's first short bout of illness, when Parliament attempted to adjust the balance of power. The years 1803-1815 show some slackening of radical activity, when the nation united under threat of invasion during the Napoleonic War. The Prince of Wales becomes Prince Regent, but does not escape continued attacks. There is great public interest in two major scandals: the Delicate Investigation' into the conduct of the separated Caroline, Princess of Wales and the dubious financial transactions of Mary Anne Clarke, mistress of the Duke of York. Waterloo and victory celebrations herald a return to social unrest." Very Good. Nº de ref. del artículo: ABE-52327
