In July 1944 RAF Bomber Command launched three raids on the railway junction and yards at Revigny-sur-Ornain, in France. Some 41 Lancasters were lost, and 231 airmen perished. The book marks the 50th anniversary of the raids on this strategically important target, for which a terrible price was paid. It details the planning, execution and aftermath of the raids, combining the military considerations with the stories of the 59 surviving airmen: some eventually made their way back to Britain, others became prisoners-of-war and tells of the French people's efforts to shelter the evaders, the activities of the "maquis" in their forest hide-outs, and the attitude of the retreating Germans as the American liberating forces came ever nearer.
