The first serious history of this uprising, F. Robert Hunter's book combines the depth of knowledge and perspective of the historian with the vividness of reportage that only first-hand experience of an event can bring. Having been resident in Jerusalem during the first year of the Intifada, Hunter is able to trace the development of the revolt through its own inner dynamic. What began as a simple rejection of the Israeli occupation through stone-throwing and strikes soon evolved into mass resistance involving acts of partial civil disobedience and attempts to achieve self-reliance by Palestinians of all ages and classes. Sustained by a forceful political programme and strategy, the Intifada has in the end come to affect the policies of the PLO, Israel and the US administration. Hunter examines key relationships between the leadership of the uprising and the population of the occupied territories, and between the Islamic groups and the Palestinian national movement. He also explores the ties between the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank and the PLO leadership abroad, in order to demonstrate a change in the very question of Palestine. While writing the book the author conducted extensive interviews with Palestinian journalists, academics, lawyers, former political prisoners, community leaders, activists and people throughout the occupied territories, as well as with Israeli lawyers, scholars and journalists, and officials from various agencies and organizations.
