Reseña del editor:
This book aims to provide a comprehensive account of the origins evolution and significance of the Intifada. The author uses accounts from the participants in the uprising, but also endeavours to bring depth and perspective to the work by taking a broad historical view of the situation. The book examines the effect of the intifada on US and Israeli policies, and in particular their attitude to Palestinian nationalism, and shows how the movement has evolved from episodes of sporadic stone-throwing to mass resistance and institutionalization.

Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Hardcover, xx + 292 pages, NOT ex-library. Book looks very good, clean with unmarked text and firm binding, free of inscriptions and stamps. Careful inspection reveals a minor very tiny edge-nick in lower inner corner of a few leaves; a small indentation to the upper edge of rear board. Good dust jacket with a short tear to the upper edge of rear panel, faint age-marks on the rear flap, regular shelfwear. --- An event of major international importance, the Palestinian Intifada has opened a new chapter in the turbulent history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The first serious history of this uprising, F. Robert Hunter's book combines the depth of knowledge and perspective of the historian with the vividness of reportage that only first-hand experience of an event can bring. Having been resident in Jerusalem during the first year of the Intifada, Hunter is able to trace the development of the revolt through its own inner dynamic. What began as a simple rejection of the Israeli occupation through stone-throwing and strikes soon evolved into mass resistance involving acts of partial civil disobedience and attempts to achieve self-reliance by Palestinians of all ages and classes. Sustained by a forceful political programme and strategy, the Intifada has in the end come to affect the policies of the PLO, Israel and the US administration. Hunter examines key relationships between the leadership of the uprising and the population of the occupied territories, and between the Islamic groups and the Palestinian national movement. He also explores the ties between the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank and the PLO leadership abroad, in order to demonstrate a change in the very question of Palestine. While writing the book the author conducted extensive interviews with Palestinian journalists, academics, lawyers, former political prisoners, community leaders, activists and people throughout the occupied territories, as well as with Israeli lawyers, scholars and journalists, and officials from various agencies and organizations. The result is a clear and comprehensive account of the origins, evolution and significance of the Intifada that has lasting value as a vivid document and as a work of critical analysis. --- Contents: 1. Restructuring of Palestinian Society in the West Bank and Gaza 2. From Acquiescence to Resistance 3. A War, Not a Revolt 4. 'The IDF Will Not Be a Mob Army' 5. 'All the Fish Are in the Water' 6. The 'Outside' Responds 7. Losing the Initiative; Epilogue; Postscript: 1990: End of Stage One; Chronology of the Intifada. Nº de ref. del artículo: 003909
