It is the general public policy of the state of Maine to do away gradually with all grade crossings. Crossings--At grade--Petition for, denied. A petition for the taking of certain railroad lands for the establishment of a public crossing leading from a highway to the freight buildings of a railroad, over the lattcrs tracks at grade, will be denied, where the Commission is of the opinion that a plan can be devised whereby, at a reasonable expense, the grade crossing will be done away with, and the public will be reasonably served. March 17, 1915. Application for establishment of grade crossing leading to freight houses; denied. By the Commission: The municipal officers of the town of Monmouth by its petition asks that this Commission adjudge that public convenience and necessity require the granting of the request contained in the petition. The Maine Central Railroad tracks cross the main street of the town at quite a sharp angle and at a point in said town which is the center of trade and traffic. The passenger station of the railroad is on one side of the tracks and the several freight buildings are on the opposite side and some distance from the highway. This makes it necessary for nearly all persons who come to the freight department in teams, to cross the tracks. Two such crossings have been used, one at each end of the passenger station and about 125 to 150 feet apart. The one which is easterly from the station and leads directly from the main highway at an ncute angle with the highway crossing seems to have been established by the railroad for the use of its freight patrons.
