No sooner had I left him, than the thought struck me, 'Surely this man must be one of those who have " entered the book:" where else could he have learnt to show me any respect.' This is a thing I had never met with in East Africa, where I was only wont to see Mohammedans and heathen, bondmen and freemen, young and old, walking up to me as independent gentlemen, and calling out 'Yambo Rebmanni;' or, 'Uforo Rebmanni,' a liberty they never take among themselves, at least not with persons who are in some way or other known to be their superiors. The superiority they saw in us seemed never entitled to any respect. A little after sunset I arrived at our house, which, to my agreeable surprise, I found in a much better condition than I had feared. Though it wants repair, it is still quite habitable. The doors, indeed, were nearly all wanting, having been carried oiif by the Wanika to sleep on, but the chief told me that they would return them as soon as I came back again. We now reap the benefit of having built a somewhat substantial house. Of the cottage at Rabbai Mpia, nothing remains standing but two window-frames: its very floor is now overgrown with high grass and castor-oil shrubs. On Tuesday morning I had the great pleasure to find, that besides Mua Muamba, who had been brought to inquire about Christ through Abbe Gonga, three new men had joined them, and among them was, truly enough, the very man who, on the previous evening, had bowed before me.
