© 1957: A stand-alone novel by Frederik Pohl & C M Kornbluth. 1st UK edition, 1st printing. Ex-library book with markings to inside front cover. Tape marks inside from previously taped down cover. Tanned text block & some foxing. Protected by new Brodart jacket cover:- Synopsis: It is the far future. Many centuries ago a runaway planet had burst across our solar system, and the mysterious pyramid-shaped structures 'living' on that planet had torn our world away from its sun and drawn it off into space. One Pyramid had shaved the crest off Everest, and squatted there. Observer? Warden? No one knew. The inhabitants of Earth had forgotten their own dissensions and had fought back, but uselessly. Now mankind continues to exist only so long as the Pyramids renew, every five years or so, the artificial sun which makes life possible. Theirs is a decaying society, ruled by scarcity, slavish conformity to traditional rules, and hysterical fear on the part of the Citizens of those few people - the Wolves - who still dare to defy the rules. Glenn Tropile is a Wolf by nature, and has also perverted his wife: assiduously he has untaught her the Citizen's meticulous ritual of manners. Outside the home his defiance has gone no further than an attempt to steal extra bread before his crime is observed. The greatest crime, however, is no more serious than the smallest: a Wolf is a Wolf, and must suffer the supreme penalty. Tropile now takes the first step towards becoming the saviour of the human race. By bemusing the gaoler with his obscenities (he actually describes such unthinkable delights as kissing a woman), he escapes from captivity. He is carried to safety by other Wolves, and learns that there is a flourishing colony of them, arming themselves for the day when they will destroy the Pyramids, subjugate the Citizens, and take over the world. How the battle is fought and by what bizarre means the Wolves' aim is accomplished is the theme of the book:- (original cost 13'6). N° de ref. del artículo 23.066.00007
