Frontispiece, and ten other plates of which two are folding. Fine Contemporary Tree Calf, gilt ruled spines, red leather title labels. The first edition is required to have 12 plates including the unedited female Hottentote plate. This volume has 11 plates all photographed see images. Lacking plate VII Female Hottentote - never bound in for censorship reasons. Vol I [ii], xxiv, 383pp, frontispiece and 5 engraved illustrations of which 2 are folding; Vol II 403pp, with 5 engraved illustrations. Provenance: bookplate for Sir Jas. Montgomery Bart of Stanhope to Vol I, bookplate removed to Vol II. Approximately 8 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt bands with six compartments, twin red leather labels with gilt titles, rubbed and worn. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn with some loss. Boards good condition tree calf boards, rubbed, marked and worn. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, others deckled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition plain, bookplate to Vol I, bookplate removed to Vol II . End papers good condition plain.
