Tehran University, established in its modern form in 1934, traces its roots back to the Dar al-Funun (Polytechnic) founded by the Qajars in 1851, and came about mainly through the integration of pre-existing institutions. In 1931, Minister of Court Abdolhossein Teymourtash initiated discussions on the requirements for establishing a university. In 1933, Acting Education Minister Ali Asghar Hekmat's proposal to Cabinet for this to go ahead was approved. Reza Shah selected the location at Jalalieyeh Gardens, and French and Swiss architects were engaged to design the campus buildings. In 1934 the College of Fine Arts was established, and the Faculty of Medicine expanded and completed with Government hospitals annexed for practical training. In 1937 women were admitted as students. The University became financially and administratively independent in 1942, with the Chancellor elected from among the faculty deans. In 1944-5 the Veterinary and Agricultural Colleges came under University administration, and a Students' Club and Hostel began operations. To address the pressing need of accommodation for students from the provinces, the Shah presented the University with the village of Amirabad. By the time of going to press, plans were being drawn up for accommodation for academic staff: "It will be seen from the above that the University has made rapid strides forward during the short period of its existence and has experienced a continuous expansion" (pp1-5). This Handbook contains a brief history, followed by sections on academic staff, foundation of the University, students, post-graduate courses, student organisations, maintenance of students, and property of the university, and members of the academic staff. The photos are of the Shah, and interior and exterior views of the various faculties, library, Teachers Training College, and University Club. N° de ref. del artículo 4794
