Preface is an extensive discussion on the Origin and Operations of the Expedition. The preface runs from pages i-cclxxxiv (284 pp). There is a black and white engraved plate, on thick paper stock, of a telescope ("The Equatoreal") after page xivi. This is the only full plate in the volume. The preface is followed by 492 numbered pages containing sections on metrometrical observations taken from Santiago, Washington, DC, Cambridge, Mass and the Cape of Good Hope. While 6000 copies of Volumes I and II were ordered printed, only 2000 copies of Volume III were order. This volume, along with volume VI, are often missing from sets. Volumes IV and V were never printed. In addition to the single full page plate the volume contains hundreds of tables and formula. ~~ Condition. The volume is ex-Libary in Very Good condition. The book has been rebound in cloth with gilt title on the spine. Paper is toned but supple and has no foxing or staining. While no library numbers are on the binding, this appears to be a durable type library rebinding. The first 20 or so pages have extensive wear and tears along the outside edges. Table of contents has manuscript number "16190" in ink and "DUP" in pencil. Aside from these notations and the durable rebinding, no other evidence of being a library book. Four 1/8 in black marks on outside edge. ~~~ Heavy book and extra shipping charge will apply if mailed to an address outside the US. N° de ref. del artículo 1856040319
