To which are added, some observations, by Robert Ferguson, on his own case, and on the points of law arising upon the information, , ASSOCATION COPY the book belonging to Lord Kenyon of Gredington Lord Chief Justice, Attorney General, Presided over the Sackville Earl of Thanet Trial. First Editions 1798-1799??. This is a nicely bound volume containing two trial transcripts, the first of Irish interest for the Trial for High Treason of James O'Coigly, Father James Coigly (aka James O'Coigley and Jeremiah Quigley) (1761-1798) who was a Roman Catholic priest in Ireland active in the republican movement against the British Crown and the kingdom's Protestant Ascendancy. He served the Society of United Irishmen as a mediator in the sectarian Armagh Disturbances. This runs to 539 pages plus IV contents pages. The Second trial is that of Right Hon. Sackville Earl of Thanet, Robert Ferguson, esquire, and others for rioting and other misdemeanours. Lord Kenyon whose copy this originally belonged to, he presided over the Sackville trial, he is mentioned at the base of the contents page where he gave the charge to the jury, and again on many pages within. The contents of this trial run to 150 pages, plus a supplementary 34 page part which also includes a folding diagram of the courtroom. Lord Kenyon has signed his name to both title pages,and has made some annotations to the margins of some pages relating to the Sackville trial. The case was tried before Lord Kenyon at the king's bench on 25 April 1799. Sir John Scott prosecuted, and Erskine conducted the defence. Richard Brinsley Sheridan appeared to give evidence for the accused. from the library of Lord Kenyon of Gredington, with his ownership name to both title pages, and Gredington written to inside front cover, Lloyd Kenyon, 1st Baron Kenyon PC SL KC (5 October 1732 ? 4 April 1802), was a British politician and barrister, who served as Attorney General, Master of the Rolls and Lord Chief Justice. The binding has some general rubbing wear else is in good solid condition, internally page edges untrimmed, some occasional small marks, the mentioned annotations else in good general condition.
