The advertising sheet with a key to the figures in the engraving on the verso and the plate are located before the Heart of Mid-Lothian double column text (where one would expect to find a frontispiece and title page for the work). The cloth and format are typical of mid-Victorian American printings of novels. Scott's Heart of Mid-Lothian tells the story of Effie Deans, who is framed and accused of the infanticide of her child with a nobleman,
