CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: At the end of summer 1863 that had seen the disastrous Confederate losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, the triumph of the Army of Tennessee at Chickamauga was a well-timed turn around for the Confederates, despite its own heavy losses. Bragg s forces at Chickamauga secured a decisive victory, breaking through Federal lines after two days of fierce fighting and the Yankee army into a siege at Chattanooga. With a combined 35,500+ causalities, the Battle of Chickamauga was the second costliest battle of the Civil War, ranking only behind Gettysburg, and was by far the deadliest battle fought in the West. Archibald Gracie IV, whose father, Archibald Gracie III, fought at the battle as a Confederate general officer, explores the events and aftermath of the Battle of Chickamauga. The book provides a detailed account of the battle, including the strategies and tactics used by both the Union and Confederate armies, as well as the experiences of individual soldiers on the battlefield. Gracie draws on a variety of primary sources, including letters, diaries, and official reports, to provide a comprehensive and accurate portrayal of the battle. Here in a nice collector's copy of a rather scarce book in the first edition. REFERENCES: DORN III #2620; NEVINS I pg 31 "A rather elaborate, informed but opinionated story of Chickamauga, includes useful maps." EICHER 101: "Composed by the son of Confederate Brig. Gen. Archibald Gracie, Jr., who was killed at Petersburg, this work seeks a reappraisal of the performance of certain commands during what the author teems the high point of the Confederate war effort. He examines in microscopic detail the actions of 20 September 1863, centered on the areas of Horseshoe Ridge and Kelly Field. The Maps are detailed and plentiful and add a deep level of understanding to the sometimes labored text. Numerous photographs of officers provide a valuable collection of Chickamauga-related images.". N° de ref. del artículo 0224030
