Third impression of the first Gollancz edition, and first wartime cheap edition, published at the beginning of the Second World War. A book of short stories, including the title story and one other that feature the character of Lord Peter Wimsey. The book was originally published by Gollancz in November 1939, with just one reprint in January 1940, before wartime restrictions forced the publisher to issue this Cheap War Edition in October 1940. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. Boards clean, but slightly darkened at the edges with age. Spine still clean and bright. The top edge is slightly dusty and darkened. No bumps to the fragile boards, and no tears to the cloth. No reading lean to the book, and the spine is tight. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. Pages clean, but the cheap paper stock has tanned over the years. Without any of the usual off-setting or foxing and scarce thus. ***In a very good thin paper printed dustwrapper, priced on the front cover and the spine at 2/6 net - the original edition had been priced at 7/6. The dustwrapper is almost complete, but has some loss at the top and tail of the spine, which only barely affects the lettering. The dustwrapper is nice and clean - much less discoloured than is usually found with Gollancz dustwrappers of this period. Spine of dustwrapper slightly browned and marked. Front and back panels nice and clean. Flaps very clean and bright, retaining the original yellow colour - just lightly creased at the edges. ***190mm x 130mm. 286 pages. ***Contents: Lord Peter Wimsey stories:"In the Teeth of the Evidence" - A dentist is poisoned and dies in a car fire, supposedly by suicide or accident, but Wimsey suspects murder and identity fraud. "Absolutely Elsewhere" - Wealthy debt-collector Mr. Grimbold is murdered, but all the suspects have alibis related to a series of phone calls, which Wimsey and Parker must unravel. Montague Egg stories: "A Shot at Goal" - Mr. Egg is drawn into a murder mystery revolving around a heated football controversy. "Dirt Cheap" - A fellow traveling salesman is murdered for his jewelry case, and the evidence of Mr. Egg's clock helps to avenge him. "Bitter Almonds" - An old gentleman's death causes great embarrassment for Mr. Egg when one of his own wines is involved. "False Weight" - Mr. Egg investigates another fellow traveling salesman's death, this time with bigamy as the motive. "The Professor's Manuscript" - Ill-fitting false teeth and a strange set of old books tip Mr. Egg off that something is not right with one of his new clients. Other stories: "The Milk-Bottles", "Dilemma", "An Arrow O'er the House", "Scrawns", "Nebuchadnezzar", The Inspiration of Mr. Budd", "Blood Sacrifice", "Suspicion", "The Leopard Lady" and "The Cyprian Cat"'. ***'"In the Teeth of the Evidence" is a collection of short stories by Dorothy L. Sayers first published by Victor Gollancz in 1939. The book's title is taken from the first story in the collection.' (Wiki) ***A third impression, and first wartime cheap edition, of this collection of short stories, published in 1940 at the start of the Second World War. Of interest to collectors of the work of Dorothy L. Sayers. An uncommon book to find in the original dustwrapper in such nice condition. Gollancz produced the books very cheaply, with thin boards and paper, and very thin dustwrappers. In consequence, pre-war and wartime copies of Sayer's detective novels are particularly elusive, and very scarce indeed in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de ref. del artículo 8458
