1835 RARE Southwest FRNOTIER Western Ingraham Americana Novel Mississippi 2v The 19th century book The South-West, is J.H. Ingraham s first historical novel of the American Southwest frontier. Despite being one of the most prolific writers of his time, Joseph Holt Ingraham has almost been forgotten in ours. Ingraham spent most of his life moving from one state to another, but he considered Mississippi his home. Ingraham published more than one hundred novels and another hundred contributions to magazines and journals. In 1835 Ingraham published his first book, The Southwest, based on a series of letters that had been published by the Natchez Courier. The Southwest, a travel book, sought to booster the image of Ingraham s adopted region. Ingraham continued writing historical adventures, often set in the Old Southwest, and became the best-paid American novelist of the 1840s. This two-volume first edition features a protective clamshell that both volumes fit comfortably in. Item number: #23326 Price: $499 INGRAHAM, J. H. The South-west. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a captivating account of the author's sea voyage from New York to New Orleans, providing a rare glimpse into the life of a cabin passenger in the 19th century. Through vivid descriptions and anecdotes, the author brings to life the challenges and experiences of sea travel during this era, including lengthy passages, seasickness, and the social dynamics among passengers. Beyond the personal narrative, this book delves into the fascinating world of maritime history and culture, exploring topics such as the role of the Gulf Stream, the dangers posed by storms and pirates, and the little-known profession of wreckers who preyed upon shipwrecks. The author also provides insights into the natural wonders encountered along the route, such as the phosphorescence of the sea and the unique geological formations of the Bahamas. Ultimately, this book serves as both a captivating travelogue and a valuable historical document, shedding light on a bygone era of seafaring and offering a unique perspective on the transformative experiences of early 19th-century America.
