With a very large folding map in full color showing the different types of soil in Victoria County, Texas. "Creation of the Division of Agricultural Soils in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1894 marked the beginning of a national commitment to soil science and soil survey activities. By 1899, soil surveyors had commenced field investigations for the first USDA soil surveys; one century later, soil surveys have been published for most counties in the United States. The surveys - inventories consisting of narrative descriptions, tables, and maps - include a wealth of interpretive information about soil characteristics and properties and about their limitations and potentials. These interpretations of how soils respond to different uses assist land users in making appropriate decisions. And while Congress and the federal government have supported the soil survey effort to help guide agricultural development, surveys have side application in a variety of environmental and land management uses. The development of the national soil survey program grew out of the intellectual curiosity and personal ambition of two men in particular, Charles W. Dabney, Jr. and Milton Whitney. But it was research at state agricultural experiment stations that created the favorable climate for Dabney's and Whitney's successes. This state-level research grew from a desire by state agricultural leaders to understand their soils and the relationship of the characteristics of those soils to plant growth. Ultimately, they believed, knowledge would contribute to a healthy agricultural economy" (Helms, ed., p. 1). Douglas Helms, et al., eds., "Profiles in the History of the U.S. Soil Survey.".
