The U S Seeded Tournament held in honor of the Silver Anniversary of the Log Cabin Chess Club of West Orange, New Jersey and cosponsored by that club and the U S Chess Federation, was one o the most interesting and hard fought chess tournaments played in the United State that year. By winning this event, without a loss of a single game, former World Junior Chess Champion William Lombardy achieved one of the outstanding triumphs of his career. Lombardy's score of 7-2 placed him a h alf point above International Grandmaster Pal Benko, while two more International Grandmasters, Larry Evans and Arthur Bisguier, captured third and fourth, respectively, a sufficient indication of the strength of Lombardy's competition. The tournament was conducted at the Log Cabin Chess Club in West Orange, from August 7 to August 22, 1959, with some of the rounds held at Mary Bain's Chess Studio in New York City. The Director was Glenn Hartleb of Tampa, Florida and the time limit was 40 moves in two and half hours. Robert Byrne took fifth followed by Charles Kalme. In seventh was Walter Shipman, eighth James Cross and ninth and tenth Edmar Mednis and James Sherwin in that order.
