Octavo, multicolored boards with paper cover label lettered in black. First edition, one of 250 copies printed. Woolmer 35. From the library of Lois and Philip C. Jessup, with his ownership signature on the front endpaper; accompanied by a letter from Ena Limebeer's husband David Mitrany, the noted political economist, presenting the Jessups with the volume. "The book also has bibliographical interest," explained Mitrany, as "it was set and printed by the hand of Leonard and Virginia Woolf; the cover is also handmade, by Roger Fry's daughter." ---- Lois Walcott Kellogg Jessup worked tirelessly for the American Friends Service Committee, the U.S. Children's Bureau (preparing reports on children in Europe during Second World War, and the United Nations, advocating for women's rights around the world. She married Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U. S. diplomat, credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. A fascinating association, linking the iconic diplomat Jessup and Mitrany, the prolific Romanian-born British scholar on international affairs. A gorgeous copy with a distinguished provenance.
