Prehistoric Peeps' from 'Punch' ; illustrated Title page + blank page + 3 pages contents + blank + Peep I + Title of illustration page + the illustration + black + then similar 4 pages again for each of the other 25 illustrations + blank + Tailpiece (red & black illustration) + blank , then + Mr. Punch's Prehistoric Peeps (colour title page or front cover?) + blank + Prehistoric Peeps spine ? Tipped on page + 2 blank + what looks like another Tailpiece (red, black gilt, blue illustrated page). Condition; Brown leather Hardback, with decorative embossed gilt decorated binding, also to spine (5 bands) title etc. in mostly very good condition, some rubbing/wear, minor scratches. Contents mostly Very good, clean & tight, inside cover 2 inscriptions Christmas 1895 & much later To Hugh from Charles 1957, inside decorative design endpage a bit loose, the very rare odd finger dirt, also to a couple of blank page opposite colour illustrated pages, edges of pages gilt. There are no page numbers and the main 26 illustrations are each preceded a blank page, Peep I, Peep II on and the a title of illustration page, The first Hansom ( mostly just 2 or 3 lines only) then the illustration. Seems to end with the Black/red tailpiece illustration, then extra to this copy only? What looks like a (colour title page or front cover?) Mr. Punch's Prehistoric Peeps (in red, black, gilt & green ink) + blank + Prehistoric Peeps spine ? Tipped on page (in gilt on green ) + 2 blank + what looks like another tailpiece type illustration (in red, black, gilt & green ink). Mr. Punch's Prehistoric Peeps illustration has "RWain 86" at the base left, so possibly designed or drawn in1886 to be published earlier then cancelled? As inside front is inscribed Christmas 1895 it is a 1st edition officially published 1896, but went on sale December 1895 (there was a later 1902 edition). To sum up an original 1896 First edition and what looks to be the designs of another book ( Mr. Punch's Prehistoric Peeps) which seems to have been changed slightly to the published 1902 edition (both titles not dated, dated from BL).
