Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. 1940. First edition. vi, 250pp. and a colour frontispiece. Elsie Jeanette Dunkerley (1880-1960), was an English girls' story writer, who took her pseudonym from that of her father, the novelist John Oxenham. She is best known for her Abbey Series of stories for girls. Patch and a Pawn is the first story in her Kentisbury series, which is tied into her Abbey series. The book introduces the reader to Patricia (Patch) Paterson (later Kane), Rhoda, Geoff, Bill and Rosalie Kane, Tansy Lillico and Roger Black. It is set in and around 'Kentisbury Castle', a fictionalised Arundel, Sussex. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with darker blue titling on the spine and front board (this is probably a variant binding as others we have seen are bound in orange cloth). The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with faint foxing to the first and last few pages, including the title-page. There is also foxing to the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. A name and date (1943) has been written on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded. The spine ends and bottom front corner are lightly bumped. There are tears of about 1/4" on the top front spine corner and the bottom front corner, and these tears have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.
