Philadelphia, octavo, ix, [2], 12-127, [2] p., hand-colored folding plate of sections and large, hand-colored folding geological map of the United States. ***CONTENT: This is Maclure's pioneering book-form memoir and map on the geology of the United States. This work, and its abbreviated 1809 predecessor, earned Maclure the title: "the father of American geology". Maclure's observations of topography, structure, mountain chains, rock types, minerals, fossils, economic resources, etc. were made in nearly every state and territory then in the Union, from the St. Lawrence River to the Gulf of Mexico. He is said to have crossed and re-crossed the Alleghany Mountains no less than 50 times. A particular focus of this treatise is the application of geology to agricultural pursuits, with discussions of climate, water resources, soil fertility, and more. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy of this exceedingly scarce report. The volume is bound in contemporary black half morocco and marbled boards; backstrip with four raised bands, gilt ruling and gilt-stamped titles in two panels. The covers are sound but rubbed and edgeworn; reinforcement to the outer joints. Hinges starting, binding firm. The text pages are mildly toned, but most are fresh, clean and bright. Later endpapers. The geological map is dissected and mounted on linen, and unfolds to 19.5 by 16.5 inches. The map is clean and well preserved, with bright colors. This is a scarce variant of Maclure's map, showing all of Florida and extending west to parts of the Rockies. Bookplate of noted paleontologist General Anthony W. Vogdes on the front pastedown as well as later American Museum of Natural History bookplates. A previous owner (likely Vogdes) has penciled a lengthy and informative biography of Maclure on a front endpaper. This is a sound copy of a celebrated early treatise on American geology. Hazen 6616.
