One of the elusive volumes of the "Bibliographical and Historical Miscellanies", the most important productions of the Philobiblon Society, for 30 years an esteemed rival to the Roxburghe Club and one of the leading scholarly societies concerned with the history of the book. The Society's constitution required it to "print, once or twice a year, as may be found practicable, a volume of Bibliographical Miscellanies, which shall consist of Notices and Analyses of Rare or Curious Books or Manuscripts, Unpublished Documents and Letters, Biographical Sketches of Persons connected with Literature, from original sources, Typographical Curiosities, Illuminations, and Illustrations of Books, and Researches into the connection of Literature with the Fine Arts, Information respecting the Value, Sales and Publication of Rare Books, and of the contents of Peculiar, Dispersed or hitherto unnoticed Collections,- Accounts of the Productions of Private Presses, Abstracts of Bibliographical Works Published or Unpublished, Any matter especially interesting to the Lovers and Collectors of Books, and the Transactions of the Society." Although the publication schedule slipped, the finely-printed Miscellanies do indeed contain a wealth of valuable information - often unavailable elsewhere and never reprinted - on the lines described, and remain of great interest.
