Descripción

Descripción:

First and only edition in Dutch, first printing, of a genuinely scarce account of the Hajj undertaken by the future Regent of Bandung and first Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs shortly before Ibn Saud's conquest of Hejaz. The account provides many important firsthand observations of the culture of religious pilgrimage and the actions of Sherif Hussein in the build up to the capture of Mecca. The present work is an expansion of an account first published in 1924 in the Bandung newspaper Algemeen Indisch Dagblad de Preangerbode, with additional detail on the history and rituals of Hajj in appendices. Chapters cover Wiranatakusumah's (1888-1965) voyage to Mecca, his impressions of the palace and library, and his pilgrimages to Taif and Arafat. During his visit, he met with Sharif Hussein several times and, in the diary, provides an eyewitness account of the flight to Jeddah in the face of Ibn Saud's advance. Wiranatakusumah's account with van Boven's editorship was also published in Indonesian in 1925. A fragile regional publication, with few copies in institutional collections outside of the Netherlands and the United States. Small octavo. Original purple card wrappers, title and decoration to front cover. With 20 half-tone plates. Owner's manuscript title to spine, contemporary ownership inscription in ink to contents page, recent pencilled ownership inscription to half title. Small losses at spine ends, wrappers a little rubbed and faded, moderate foxing internally, plates bright. A very good copy. N° de ref. del artículo 151694
