FIRST EDITION; presumed first printing, with no indication of others. A chunky octavo; quarter bound with red morocco spine, gilt details and six rulings thereon, red linen-textured cloth boards. Spine panel rubbed with small missing piece below ruling at tail. Corners lightly rubbed, but the boards are very robust and the overall condition externally is clean and square. Top edge dyed red but faded, other edges mottled red -tight and square. Brown eps, 314pp. Tight, bright and clean throughout, some pale foxing spots only to prelims opening pages and index at rear. Attractive photogravure frontis. with tissue guard - this clear, but with small hole. 16 additional full-page half-tone plates, generally pulled a little towards binding. The eighth, of John Braham, has small triangular loss at inner top, not affecting image. Small pencil note from former bookseller to half-title top: 'Actress, Theatre Manager, Opera Singer and Manager'. Indeed, Lucia Elizabeth Vestris (1797 - 1856) was a phenomenal talent; not only a highly popular actress and contralto, but even more successful with ambitious touring theatrical shows, which she managed with great success, both in Great Britain and America.
