(B&W photographs) The first volume of autobiography by the great British filmmaker, who began his career in the silent film era as a "boy-of-all-work" at the studio of director Rex Ingram in the south of France, subsequently working his way up through the quota-quickie-dominated British film industry of the 1920s and 1930s (working with Alfred Hitchcock, among others). Hired by producer Alexander Korda in the late 1930s, he teamed up with Emeric Pressburger, and went on to produce and direct some of the most glorious productions of the British cinema, including BLACK NARCISSUS and THE RED SHOES; the present volume leaves off just following the production and release of the latter film. This is the true first edition, preceding the American (Knopf) edition by a year.
