First edition, with an interesting provenance. A very good 3 volume set in matching half leather bindings. Thick 8vo. 9.5" x 6.25" x 2.5". Red morocco spine and corners over red cloth covered boards. Hinges and corners carefully strengthened. Pink Windsor Castle Bookplate to the verso of the front board of volume 1. Neat dedication to front free-endpaper of volume 1: "Doris Fortescue Carr from her affectionate friend Hugh Childers November 5th 1908. This copy (unbound) was the one, which was used for corrections for the popular edition, published October 28th, 1908." All three books with previous owner's signature to front endpaper:"Terence Doherty July 1958". Also a large bookplate(to each volume); "D.F. And R. Whytlaw-Gray." All volumes with deckled page edges. Clean text and illustrations throughout. Light spotting to endpapers and margins of some leaves. Vol.1: 1837-1843 pp.20/pp.641 - Vol. 2: 1844-1853 pp.16/pp.575 - Vol.3: 1854-1861 pp.9[pp.3]/pp.660 ending with Index and folding family trees . ** Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whytlaw-Gray being the famed chemist who first isolated the element radon. Robert Whytlaw-Gray married Doris Fortescue Carr at St Stephen Walbrook on 22 July 1911. *** "Doris Fortescue Carr was born on 5 November 1880 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, her father, Arthur, was 33, and her mother, Eleanor, was 26. She married Robert Whytlaw-gray on 22 July 1911 in England. They had two children during their marriage. She died in September 1961 in Warwick, Warwickshire, at the age of 80." **** "Hugh Robert Eardley Childers was born on 10 January 1862, his father, Hugh, was 34 and his mother, Emily, was 35. He married Eleanor Matilda Swinny on 16 April 1906. He died on 30 August 1912 in London, London, at the age of 50." ***** Eleanor Matilda Swinny was born on 13 September 1853 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
