COMMERCE HOUSE ALMANACK FOR 1890 PUBLISHED & PRESENTED BY Leak & Thorp, Coney St., York. GENERAL & FURNISHING DRAPERS * SILK MERCERS * MANTLE MANUFACTURERS & MILLINERS * WOOLEN DRAPERS & TAILORS. Ben Johnson & Company of York. Original hand-drawn and hand-painted 1890 almanac cover design for Leak & Thorp of Coney Street; along with a printer's proof copy for the same. On the hand-painted example the street scene lithographic print to the front cover panel is laid down onto the paper. Otherwise, all lettering and decoration were drawn and applied by hand. Each sheet measures approx. 9.75" x 7.25" (24.75cm x 18.5cm). The original hand-painted design shows vertical creases to centre, where the spine-folds would have been situated. Some rippling, partial tanning and foxing. The lower edge showing a small angular tear, of perhaps 1cm in total; whilst there's also a little small loss at upper fore corner. Patches of residue to the blank rear, where the design was fixed down at some point, resulting in a couple of instances the paper thinning somewhat, presumably upon removal. Remains a nice original survivor nonetheless. The subsequent proof is rubbed, with a little partial staining and occasional marginal creasing, and is fixed against a brown paper backing. Please see photos for further detail, and check out our other listings for other early Ben Johnson designs, alongside similar advertising work by George McCorquodale & Co. of Leeds, to include original proofs, hand-painted and hand-coloured designs, etc. N° de ref. del artículo 000645
