Ferguson, Rachel. The Late Widow Twankey in Twenty-Two Magnificent Scenes . London: Jonathan Cape, [1943]. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-191 [192]. Original pale yellow cloth, front and spine panels lettered in red. A fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with a bit of negligible loss at spine ends; the exuberant front panel presents very nicely. A wartime book, rather scarce now. #3352. $125. The story's premise is that the characters of the London pantomime theaters, derived largely from the commedia dell-arte, had counterparts in real life, and still do. The story identifies them and tracks their fantastic doings. This provides an early example of a motif treated most famously in recent times by Jonathan Carroll's The Land of Laughs (1980). Ferguson repeatedly worked variations on this theme, with either comical or darkly comical intent. Her books thus lead the reader into the worlds of other writers' books, but also lead those books into her own. N° de ref. del artículo 3352

FIRST EDITION, one leaf slighty creased at bottom corner, pp. 192, crown 8vo, original straw-coloured cloth, lettered in red to upper board and backstrip, very slight lean to spine, top corners a little pushed, a few tiny spots to top edge, dustjacket (by Hans Tisdall?), price-clipped, slightly rubbed, nicked and chipped with a small closed tear at foot of rear panel, very good. Like much of the author's work, the novel has a theatrical setting - here a village pantomime, which allows the incorporation of some grotesque elements in the depiction.
