CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: A scarce history of early West Virginia, carved out of northwestern Virginia during the Civil War when Union sentiment overrode the prevailing Confederate loyalties throughout the rest of the state. The author, Major Theodore F. Lang of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry (prior designated 3rd West Virginia Infantry Mounted Infantry) writes in his Preface: This work has been written in deference to the Author*s convictions that a great neglect exists at this time, and has existed for many years, in relation to the history of the part taken in the late war by the loyal West Virginians, both civil and military, who stood so firmly for the preservation of the Union…. The Author's personal reminiscences are largely taken from notes kept during his term of over three years' service in the field and, having been made at the time the acts occurred, their accuracy has not been impaired by time. REFERENCES: DORN II#1499; NEVINS II pg. 154; Mostly a military history with regimental roster; contains good sections on the attitudes that existed between Virginians and West Virginians. EISNER 959: "The author, a major in the 6th West Virginia Cavalry, examines all the campaigns in Western Virginia as well as major engagements in the Shenandoah Valley, Second Bull Run, and actions associated with the defense of Washington.Lang examines George McClellan's early operations in western Virginia before launching into a lengthly section of personal reminiscences that contains much of value. The author then shifts focus to offer perhaps his most valuable contributions, a running account of the cavalry, infantry, and artillery units from West Virginia during the war.".
