VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "The King's Recruits" Translated by Sarah M. S. Pereira from the German of Dr. W. Noeldechen, Author of "The Duke's Page" and "Baron and Squire". Dated from Preface, this book is believed to be the First Edition, published by James Nisbet & Co., Limited, 1895, from The Boys' Holiday Library series. 12mo, 20 cm x 13.7 cm x 4.2 cm, Green cloth-covered boards, Gilt embossed lettering & colour decoration on spine & front cover, All edges gilt. 402 pages. Weight: 772 Grams. CONTENTS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! However, there are several cracks between pages throughout, including between pastedowns & endpapers at front and back of book. Spine is discoloured & soft but mostly clean, bumped, scuffed & faded either end, small split in cloth at head, decoration fully visible but slightly worn away in places, gilt a bit dull. Cover is scuffed & scratched but mostly clean on front, back slightly marked, some small bumps, gilt quite bright, decoration fully visible but worn away in places, edge wear. Corners are bumped, scuffed & slightly frayed. Gilt on outer edges quite bright but scuffed. Ink annotation on 1st end paper. Some pages (very few) have tiny edge tears, and/or bumps, and/or small corner folds/creases, and/or larger foxing marks mostly in margins. Illustration plate facing p. 116 is missing small corner piece. Page 199/200 is missing tiny piece from top edge. Page 273/274 has a large diagonal fold. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. VERY RARE ITEM, BEAUTIFUL INSIDE!!!
