First impression of the true first edition, published by Hutchinson in 1945. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Please note that a previous owner has made some neat marginal notes and underlined some of the text in soft pencil - could be erased if so wished. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are very clean, with just some small marks on the front board (please see scans). Page block edges clean with no foxing. No creases or bumps. No tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. There is a slight forward reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with the original owner's name and date in ink at the top of the front free endpaper. As mentioned, there is some underlining and marginal notes in soft pencil (please see scans). Pages otherwise clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 7s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is exceptionally clean and unmarked. Despite being printed on very thin paper, there are only minimal areas of loss, mainly at the top of the spine, and no serious creasing - just some light rubbing and creasing at the edges. The spine is unfaded and unbrowned. The back panel, although white, remains very clean. Dustwrapper bright. ***148 pages including a detailed Index at the back of the book. 192mm x 130mm. ***'Jazz has become, within a single generation, an inescapable element in modern living. Here is its history, told in terms of the men and women who have created it. The tempestuous, gaudy life of the old French Quarter of New Orleans, the Mississippi levees and showboats, Chicago's South Side in the lurid Gangster Era, the Black Belts of St. Louis and Kansas City and the teeming streets and dives of Harlem furnish a setting for a picturesque procession of famous, notorious or obscure music-makers. Iain Lang's studies of the origins of Jazz have aroused lively enthusiasm and provoked equally lively controversy, both in this country and in the United States. "Jazz in Perspective" carries this exploration wider and deeper, while still stressing th human basis of musical technicalities. An important feature of the book is an anthology of Blues, with sixty examples of these terse, salty, wistful, satirical or dramatic songs of the people. A brisk running commentary interprets the Background of the Blues.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first printing of the true first edition, in very good condition, in a very good original dustwrapper. The book was produced in complete conformity with the authorized economy standards - as mentioned on the printer's page. Uncommon in such nice condition, albeit with the pencil annotations, which actually may be of interest to jazz or blues historians. We also have a copy of the Jazz Book Club edition listed on ABE, which was published sometime later in 1957, also in the dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de ref. del artículo 8789
