"4to., (11 ¾ x 9 ½ inches). Quarter leather with brown cloth boards. Title stamped elaborately in gold on front board with a gilt panel, in blind on rear. Flat spine with 7 compartments separated by gilt tooled Greek revival band. Lightly marbled end pages (some wear to gilt panel lettering on title and spine but presents very well, light shelf wear). Provenance: Small bookplate inscribed "Ex Libris Volkmann". Daniel G. Volkmann, born in California, was an avid book collector, award-winning architect, and patron of the arts. His collection took off when he inherited his mother's library of rare books relating to the history of California. His loyalty to this subject resulted in collecting a complete first edition set of the Zamorano 80 - a feat accomplished by only three others. First edition. A beautiful copy of a scarce first edition from 1883. Illustrated with engraved portraits and original lithographs showing Californian local residences and businesses. Includes 2 lithograph title pages, 88 lithograph plates with at times two or more views to a page, and 15 steel engraved portraits with original tissue guards. Lithographs include striking vistas of Victorian and modern homes, ranches; usually shown with a windmill, stores, hotels, banks, post offices, the Agency of Wells Fargo & Co. missions, mills, orchards, a vineyard, a dairy, a feed & livery stable, or a "fashion stable." One of the more outstanding views depicts The Wharf at Carpentaria with a paddled steamboat. The steel engraved portraits are of stunning quality; each accompanied with a printed signature underneath which could easily be mistaken for the individual's true handwriting.
