2003. (Hardcover boxed set) Near fine, no dust jacket. 445, 366, 352, 347pp. Four volumes in red cloth with gilt and blue decorated covers in a near fine illustrated burgundy slipcase. Maps, tables, black and white and color photographs and illustrations, index. Minor spotting to the page edges of volume one. "The four volumes of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples together constitute Churchill's last book - the last of more than twenty. It is difficult to be absolutely precise about numbers because of a combination of his liking for multi-volume works and of the borderline between 'real' books on the one hand and on the other long pamphlets and collections of speeches or articles being somewhat misty" - from the Introduction. Introduction by Roy Jenkins. Vol. 1 The Birth of Britain. Vol. 2 The New World. Vol. 3 The Age of Revolution. Vol. 4 The Great Democracies. (History, History--Europe). Leatherbound. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Red three-quarter leatherbound covers are mostly clean, with gilt ruling. Corners are sharp. Vol. II upper corners a little bumped. See photos. Spine has raised bands, gilt ornament and text and is bright with firm ends. Binding is rebound. Marble end papers/ pastedowns coordinate with binding. Pastedowns and feps have a few binder's marks, some toning at edges. Bookplate on front pastedown from Cragwood estate, home of Jane Engelhard. Interior is gently age-toned. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Text block edges have gilt along head, a few marks at foot edge. See photos.** PS2024.0619** 416 + 344 + 332 + 322 pages. 6 x 9 inches** A very good first edition set of Winston Churchill's four-volume history of Britain and its former colonies and possessions around the world, all housed in handsome bindings from Bayntun (Riviere) Bindery of Bath, England.** Churchill began work on this history in 1937; war and then the writing of several other works delayed its completion, so that it was not until the mid-1950s, when Churchill was in his early eighties, that he was able to finish his work. The four volumes cover the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain (55 BC) to the end of the Second Boer War (1902). The books were bestsellers and generally well reviewed thanks to their narrative power as well as the fame of their author.** Of interest also is the provenance. The bookplates on the front pastedowns come from Cragwood, the Far Hills (NJ) estate that was home to Charles W. Englehard Jr. and his wife Jane. Jane Engelhard (1917-2004) was an American philanthropist and arts patron, and it is from her estate that this book comes.** First edition, per the publisher's information.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. Seller Inventory #009999"**. Nº de ref. del artículo: 009999
