____Graff=1846____ Smith/NW=4318____An interesting piece of political and social satire from the period when Montana was choosing the site for the state capitol._____ . _____ Apparently in response to a series of pamphlets from Helena's boosters, this anonymous work was compiled to mock that city's self-avowed sophistication._____ ._____"That Helena is the social as well as the commercial, financial, agricultural, metallurgical, meteorological, geographical, astronomical, geological, theological, apostolical, political, intellectual, literary, educational, musical, theatrical, legal, medical, metaphysical, artistic, hygienic and esoteric center of Montana, is a fact which should admit no dispute; it is a fact which the citizens of Helena demonstrated long ago not only to their own satisfaction but doubtless also to the complete conviction of the great majority of the people of the state." (p.5). _____ Despite the Helena imprint, it was almost certainly printed in one of the competing cities, Graff voting for Anaconda._____ It's true colors show most clearly in the rear cover illustration portraying an octopus, labeled Helena, with its tentacles reaching._____out to engulf Fort Missoula, Butte, Virginia City, Fort Ellis, Livingston, Castle, Fort Keogh and Great Falls. _____ Illustrated with black & white line drawings and concluding with three pages of mock ads for nonexistent Helena businesses."The Thirty-Fifth National Bank of Helena, Montana / Capitol $200,000,000 / Surplus, September 15, 1894 $18.24 / Patronized by the Nobility and Gentry / Cultured Tellers and Bookkeepers / Satisfaction Guaranteed or money refunded, when we have it to refund". _____ There is a 1/2" tear to the rear cover. _____.
