CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Spine faded with faint evidence of label removed, spine ends lightly chipped, small split on spine, else minor shelf rubbing. Interior has bookplate from the Essex Institute and with blind stamp on title page, faint ink stamp on title page, else is clean and tight. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Wood was a lawyer from Belvidere, IL when he enlisted on 4 September 1862 at Rockford, IL as a 1st lieutenant, commissioned into Field & Staff of the 95th on the same day. He was promoted on 4 September 1862 to 1st lieutenant and adjutant before mustering out on 17 August 1865 at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL. He was a member of GAR Post #164 (Hurlbut) in Belvidere after the war. The 95th Illinois fought in the West with the Armies of the Ohio and Cumberland. Engagements include the Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Buzzard's Roost, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Jonesborough, Franklin, and Nashville. Written immediately after the war as a memorial for the members of the regiment and families as a record of their service. Very scarce early post-Civil War western theater regimental history. A scarce pre-fire Chicago imprint.
