VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "The Golden Magnet" By Geo. Manville Fenn. Illustrator: Gordon Browne. This book is believed to be the First Edition, published by Blackie & Son, London, 1884. 12mo, 19.4 cm x 13.7 cm x 4 cm, Brown cloth-covered bevelled boards, Gilt embossed lettering & colour decoration on spine and front cover, Burgundy end papers. 384 pages. Weight: 789 Grams. BELIEVED TO BE FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE!!! However, there are several cracks forming between pages, including between pastedown & end paper at front of book. Two illustration plates are missing. Spine and cover are very worn & marked, gilt & decoration visible but scuffed & mostly worn away. Spine is soft, bumped & frayed either end with some damage there, binding slack, pages look uneven. Corners are bumped & frayed, boards exposed & worn away there. End papers & pastedowns marked & damaged more so at front with loss of paper exposing mesh in spine area. Ink annotations on first title page. Unfortunately most pages have marks & foxing from being in a house fire, but all text is fully legible, just not spotlessly clean pages. Some pages have corner folds/creases, and/or tiny edge bumps/tears. Small tear on illustration plate facing p. 114. Ink markings over but not obscuring text on p. 134. Pages 151 to 160 have a crease. Page 373/374 has a large fold. Page 384 has darker marks mostly in margin. Very light age tanning & foxing throughout. RARE BUT FRAGILE SOUGHT-AFTER ANTIQUE BOOK!!! Full title: "The Golden Magnet: A Tale of the Land of the Incas". Another great story of sea travel, treasure and adventure about a young man who goes seeking his fortune in South America, leaving behind his father's failing business. Illustrated with black & white plates including Frontispiece (However, plate facing p. 148 and plate facing p. 257 are missing). 53 chapters in total, here are the first ten: I: Introductory. II: After Three Ages. III: I Come to an Understanding with my Father. IV: Tom Catches the Complaint. V: A Sailor on Sea-Serpents. VI: Onward. VII: Feeding the Sharks. VIII: The New Land.
