Gift of the Wind: The Corpus Christi Bayfront by Bill & Marjorie K Walraven. Published by Javelina Press, Corpus Christi, TX, 1997. 1st Edition. No DJ. Oblong. Condition: Nr Fine. Some edge wear, overall content excellent. 112 Pgs. LCCN 97-93251. From its earliest days Corpus Christi tried to tell the world about the city by the sea. Founder Henry Lawrence Kinney advertised the Naples of the Gulf to induce Europeans to come and buy land from him. Even though corpus Christi is isolated, without railroads and with limited access to the sea, the town remained optimistic. Through adversity of storms, war, bandit raids, and economic depressions, boosters never quit. Railroads came, and it seemed Deep Water was on its way. Then hopes appeared dashed by the tragic 1919 hurricane. The killer storm was a blessing in disguise, leading to the industrial development of a modern city. The story of the bayfront, past and present, it the story of what Corpus Christi is today. Illustrated with color and black & white photos. Description text copyright 2011 BooksForComfort.
