Forty Drawings, Ronald Searle, Cambridge At The University Press, 1946, First Edition A collection of forty drawings selected from an exhibition of more than three hundred of Searle's works at the Cambridge School of Art in December 1945. Many of these drawings were made in harsh and strange surroundings, drawn in strange inks upon precious scraps of paper during Searle's time as a prisoner of war in Singapore. The drawings have been arranged in approximate order of date. The artist was twenty at the beginning of the book and twenty five at the end. In good condition, the binding is straight and tight. There is foxing to the front and back boards, a tear to the bottom corner of the front board, a small tear to the top corner of the front board, tears to the top and bottom edges of the spine, and a tear to the top edge of the back cover. The covers have partially eased away from the boards. The end papers and pages are free from marks. A rare collection of Searle's early work.
